Driving to Shahzada, WHICH ROAD? compiled 13/7/08, updated 19/8/08 and 22/8/08.

Friday morning before Shahzada, 22/8/08. Between about 4am and 8am, there was about 5mm of rain in St Albans. The road works crew has regraded the dirt road section from Buckitty to Mogo quarry on 21/8/08 and with the rain it has turned into a quagmire. At this time the road is 4 wheel drive only and not recommended for 4 wheel drive. The road surface is about 200 mm of slush. The road crew are working on the road on Friday morning. The alternate and much longer route from the north is take George Downs Drive to Central Mangrove then turn right onto Wisemans Ferry Rd. There is also road works at Gunderman but the road is sealed in the area of these roadworks.

For drivers using Wisemans Ferry Road from Gosford direction to St Albans, there are roadworks in two places near Gunderman. The only problem that I experienced on 17/8/08 was the hold up at the traffic control light because of the single lane in operation. There are also bridgeworks at Gundaman Creek.

There are 2 roads from Wisemans Ferry to St Albans on either side of the Macdonald River. Both roads are 20 km in length.

The Settlers Rd, which continues on from Wisemans Ferry Rd (from Gosford direction) has 10 km unsealed. The unsealed section of this road was found to be in good condition for an unsealed, earth formed road. In fact the surface of the dirt road on 17/8/08 was smoother than the Wisemans Ferry road, which is sealed, but a lot more dusty. There were some small pot holes and minimal corrugations.

The St Albans Rd which starts at the Webbs Creek Ferry has been fully sealed, but there were problems with the road surface and some of the freshly sealed 5km had to be ripped up and re-sealed. This was still found to be a work in progress on 13/7/08 with about 2 km still to be re-sealed. There were some small pot holes in the rest of this sealed road.

The third way into St Albans from Bucketty on the Wollombi Road is 35 km unsealed. The Wollombi Road from Bucketty was found to be in good condition for an unsealed, earth formed road. Most pot holes were small and not too deep, corrugations were minimal, but watch the soft spot on the approach to the bridge where Mogo Creek goes under the road at the bottom of the hill as you reach the valley floor. If this road is used, take it slow and enjoy the vivid pink boronia and brilliant yellow wattle blooms in the first few km after leaving the George Downs drive. Much of this road is one lane wide, watch for vehicles approaching, also watch the edges as there are no safety fences. Watch out for a few overhanging bushes as you descend the hill and stock on the road in the Common.

The St Albans Bridge still has a gantry on both sides of the road on the St Albans Road side making the entry to the bridge a potential problem for long or wide vehicles. The bridge, which is a single lane, ie no passing or overtaking, has a limit of 7.5 metres for vehicle length, 3 metres for vehicle width, 15 tons gross vehicle weight and a 10km /h speed limit. Long or wide vehicles will need to swing wide when entering the bridge from the St Albans Road / Branch Road side. There is a give way sign on the St Albans Village end of the bridge. Large vehicles are advised to use Settlers Road and avoid the bridge.

Exercise special care on the corners in the unsealed parts of Settlers Road and Wollombi Rd (from Bucketty).

Bicentennial and Lower Portland Roads are totally unsuitable for floats, trailers and caravans.

All roads in the area are narrow and winding, drive with care and especially observe the low gear signs on the hill descending into Wisemans Ferry on the Old Northern Road.
